Starting from the Arataki Visitors' Centre and heading out towards the Exhibition Drive track to the Filter station and back; an easy walk with a good opportunity to check out the local flora and read the information boards along the way. We’ll then drop down onto Pipeline Road and up well gravelled but steep Slip track where you will see and hear tuis, wood pigeons and hopefully spot the tiny little grey warbler. There’ll be good views of the Nihotupu Dam, the airport and Glenbrook Steel Mill along the way.
After a late lunch at the Arataki Visitors' Centre the option is to head under the road and take in the extra loops with the Plant ID Loop walk and continue on the Upper and Lower loops to the Kauri Cathedral and back.
Note ID loop can be done in isolation from the larger walk and will take around 15-20 minutes to complete.
For those who choose, they can stay and relax, check out the Visitors' Centre or enjoy a Dutch Delight ice-cream.
This is a well maintained track, mostly hard packed gravel with only a small amount of off-roading. If the weather has been fine, expect little or no mud; good trail-shoes are more than sufficient.
