Tawharanui Regional Park, North Auckland

  When:  Sunday 23 October 2022
Time:     8.30 AM  - early start to avoid crowds
  Location:
1181 Takatu Road, Tāwharanui Peninsula 0986
Just inside the big rolling predator proof fence, to right.
(Main carpark & what was gravel road being resealed      (PLEASE NOTE NO BUS TODAY, AS BUS IS AWAY)

We will do things a bit differently this long weekend, as the main carpark & what was gravel road is currently undergoing sealing, so we'll meet just inside the park and hit different tracks first.  This will be the outer tracks, so decent work out and a number of short sharp hills.

The stunning Tawharanui peninsula is a pest-free habitat, behind a predator proof fence, so treasured native species like Bellbirds, Whiteheads, Geckos, Takahe, Dotteralls, Kaka, Oyster Catchers, Little Blue Penguins and Kiwi and many more thrive. And if you’re lucky, you might spot Seals vying for a sunny rock or frolicking in the sea. Bird life should be very active, as they zoom around between abundant nectar sources.
We'll make sure we complete the tracks that usually have the most bird life also.

The park has multiple tracks of varying length, but times will be flexible depending on how many photos of birds you want to take and the distance party has a new track to play with.
All parties should have plenty of time go for a swim afterwards, so make sure you bring your swimming gear & small, light weight towel in your pack to enjoy the crystal clear water.

With low tide around 12.29pm we may have the opportunity to go check out two sea caves!  Steady footing is needed there.

Expect to walk 4.5 - 5 hours on uneven terrain & please bring plenty of water as it should be sunny and quite warm.

If joining us for this event, as with all tramps, please ensure that all your gear, especially footwear is scrupulously clean before and cleaned after, especially as there are Kauri in the area.  Please bring a clean change of footwear for the return trip to get into good regular after tramping habits.
