Waiuku South Forest
A relatively easy tramp in the South Waiuku Forest, bounded by the Waikato River, the West Coast, and the world’s largest Ironsand mine.
We will set off from the carpark and head straight to the hight point, overlooking Port Waikato and Waikato North Head mine site, which supplies all the ore for NZ Steels ironmaking. We will then head back down through mature exotic forest, to have lunch on the shores of the Waikato River. Along the river bank for a while, tide permitting, then back inland through well marked trails to the bus.
As with all my tramps, the weather will be fine, we will be under cover most of the time so not too hot, and never muddy. All the same I prefer to wear my boots on these tracks because I can’t be bothered removing the sand from my shoes at the end of the day, but wear what you like. No great hills but rolling country and in places soft sand underfoot, so you will get a workout and perhaps enjoy some new territory.
