We will park the Bus at the Churchill Park Carpark off Riddell Road and first visit Karaka Beach Glendowie, off Peacock Road. Access is by a steep path down to the beach, a hidden gem of Tamaki Makarau an interesting little bay as it is the entrance to the Tamaki River and was one of the four sites in Auckland used for the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. Today it has a few of the old style Kiwi baches with no road access.
From there, backtrack a little and head south to pass Glendowie Boating Club, Roberta Reserve, Tahuna Torea Nature Reserve, Waiotaiki Nature Reserve, and onto Pt England Reserve. It’s from here we will head inland following the Omaru Creek walkway to Maybury Reserve, Glen Innes, and locating the Apirana Reserve Walkway taking us up to St Heliers Bay Road. We follow this road some 3 kilometers to St Heliers before turning right and making our way up Cliff Road to Achilles Point for some extraordinary views up the harbor and Rangitoto Island from the viewing platform. It’s from there we make our way to Glover Park and then a short distance back to Churchill Park and the bus.
Light footwear or running shoes will be sufficient for this trip.
