North Shore Tramping Club
The Rat’s Tooth / Onetai Valley
You will need to be of good medium fitness and agile for this one, this is not a DOC marked or maintained track, it is an advanced tramping track and will require multiple stream crossings, expect wet feet, mud, and a 500-meter + height gain, approx. 6 hours. This is a track we have not done before.

This tramp starts at the end of Onetai East Road on private property, who the owner has generously granted us permission to cross, following the Onetai stream up on the true Right before crossing it many times, we will pass an old hauler engine, a volcanic cave, waterfalls, and then we will see if we can locate some Māori canoes, these canoes were probably used to mark tribal boundaries. Further up the valley we should hopefully get views of the Marototo and the Te Hue valleys, before we arrive for the climb to the Rat’s Tooth, for those of us who dare!
There will be Kauri on this tramp so please make sure your boots are clean!
You will need a good level of fitness.
