Lower Kaimai Ranges Mini Weekend.
Te Whare Okioki Hut -12 bunks
Dates 11-12 October 2025
Leaving Como Street, Takapuna 8.00am Saturday 11th October
Returning 4pm Sunday 12th October
Drive time approx. 3 hours
Saturday
We will be leaving from the Whakamarama road end on the eastern side of the Kaimai’s, and tramp along the lovely rambling Ngamuwahine Stream, up the Leyland O’Brien tramway track, passing the odd relic from bygone days, to the junction with the Kaimais North – South track. There we turn right and continue along to Te Whare Okioki hut.
About 10.5 kilometres, 3.5 hours of reasonably easy going tramping but you will need to be medium fit, as we want to cover this distance in reasonably good time, expect some stream crossings, possible damp feet as well as some mud. A good set of boots are recommended.
Sunday
Set off in a northly direction along the North South track to the junction of the Te Tuhi and Ngamarama tracks. Turn right down the Ngamarama track to complete a loop to the bus. 10 kilometers about 3.5 hours.
Te Whare Okioki hut is booked for 12 people so if you are not in quick enough, you will be sleeping in your tent.
Possible Distance Party Option:
Options are available for a distance party if we get enough interest.
Saturday
Same as the Te Whare Okioki party but branch off to Mangamuka hut (4 bunks + tent sites) for the night. 4 hours.
Note: A tent is required.
Sunday
Head North to the Te Tuhi track then East to the Ngamarama track and back to the bus. 4 hours.
Te Whare Okioki Hut: $70 includes hut fee
Distance party / Tenting: $45
To be paid in full no later than 24th September
