Come for a Northland mini weekend away and experience the rugged Tangihua Forest situated near Whangarei. Home or out party options.
Duration: Saturday 22nd November departing 8am and returning Sunday 23rd November 2025.
Tangihua Forest & Lodge
Details: Drive North from Auckland up State Hwy 1 turning off at Mangapai Rd, South of Whangarei
Then to Tangihua Lions Lodge - Omana Rd (~2 1/2hrs).

Home Party
Staying at the spacious, well equipped Tangihua Lions Lodge.
For the Home / Lodge Party there is a variety of activities available to suit everyone from people wanting to enjoy a leisurely weekend away to those who would like to do something more energetic,
including:
Kauri Grove walk (1 ½ hrs)
The Tumanako loop track (2 hrs)
Nature Walk
Day tramp up to the Horokaha Transmitter tower. (~ 4 1/2 hrs)
Kauri Dam
Tangihua Lodge has four bunk rooms, a central dining - lounge overlooking extensive decks, (one completely covered), a large kitchen and storage facilities, his and hers ablution areas with 4 showers and 4 toilets each. There is a disabled bathroom
The excellent facilities include a steriliser, ovens and stove top plus a large hot plate and fridge – freezer. Perfect for a pot luck or shared dinner! All cooking utensils, cutlery and crockery are provided.
Bunk rooms - on each side of the main dining area there is one five, and one twenty bed bunk room, sleeping a total of 50 people.
Fit /Out Party
Classic back-country tramp for fit and experienced trampers. For those trampers wanting a challenging back country tramp this will offer everything. You will need to take plenty of water and good warm clothing, as the ridges can be very exposed.
Saturday 22nd:
Arrive ~10.30am: From the Tangihua Lions Lodge we will follow the Te Haua Uru Track to junction of the Tangihua Main ridge track and the Northern Tangihua track (3hrs 45). From the Northern Tangihua track we will continue to Tangihua Hut (approx. 2.5-3 hours) with option to do a side trip to Mt Tangihua.
Saturday night Tangihua Hut: An 8 bunk (non-bookable) back country Hut.
Sunday 23rd:
Return over the Northern Tangihua track to the Tangihua Main ridge track then across to the Horokaka Receiver station. (3 1/2 hrs). From there return via the Horokaka Track to Tangihua Lions Lodge (1 1/2hrs)
Depart: Saturday: 22nd November: 8am: Como Street, Takapuna
and travel north to Tangihua Road end Car Park
Cost:
Home Party: $85 (includes Tangihua Lions Lodge Cost).
Fit Party: $50 plus one $10 Standard blue hut ticket (or use your Backcountry Hut Pass). Tents are required to be carried – hut not bookable but ticket required for facility use.
N.B: Places on this Trip are limited as Tangihua Lodge requires pre- payment booking
We need minimum numbers for the trip to proceed - at least 8 in the home party, and 12 overall.
