THIS SATURDAY 20th September 10am to 12pm
COMMUNITY WORKING BEE - Fernhill Escarpment, behind Massey University, Albany.
Students, fit kids, adults, we need lots of people to come help.
Continuing our giving back to the community, this time, with very urgently needed weeding. Whilst you might think weeding isn't as important as tree planting, it's actually really imperative!
Since the massive floods just over 2.5 years ago, where the water from this river (Oteha Stream) flash flooded about 8 metres deep! This amazing forest escarpment that had almost no weeds, now has had a lot of weeds washed in. One of really problematic weeds here is Tradescantia which is a soft ground cover which absolutely smothers tiny little native tree seedlings trying to grow! Baby Kahikatea, Lacebark, Wineberry, Totara, Titoki and more desperately need our help so they can reach their potential size, many that live to be massive forest giants that live for hundreds of years with tree roots to stop the river bank eroding.
Weeding Tradescantia is easy, it's a soft plant and we'll show you how to effectively remove this Pest Species to enable our native plants that our native birds and creatures depend on.
