North Shore Tramping Club
Maratoto Rock- Coromandel Tramp.
Medium & the Brave!
Sunday March 1st
Please bring the correct cash - $25 members / $30 non-members
Maratoto Rock is a steep and intimidating looking rock viewed from where we park the bus at McBrinn stream, in fact it looks like a mountain. Our main objective for this trip is to use a rough un-maintained track beginning from crossing the Maratoto stream and climbing up on to a saddle on the eastern side of the Maratoto mammoth, from here you will have some marvellous views of the Waipaheke valley and general lower Coromandel area, you may wish to go no further and that will be ok as there are some lovely spots for lunch breaks on the way. For those wishing to climb to the summit a rough, short track will take you to the top which will require some scrambling and a rickety-looking cable to help you for this little epic summit attempt! This mission is only about 2 hours’ return, so we may see if we can find the track that leads to the Volunteer mine in the Waipaheke valley as an extra, this mine in the Maratoto area was the only mine back in the day that made some money. Bring your swimming kit if you think you may want a swim to cool off before departure back to Takapuna.
