Location: Kauaeranga Valley, Coromandel.

Piraunui Track, Coromandel Forest Park, Coromandel, New Zealand - Plan My Walk

This track starts in the scenic and popular Kauaeranga valley - out the back of the Thames township on the Coromandel coast. From the Visitor Centre we begin by fording the Kauaeranga River. There is no bridge and this is a reasonable size river to test your skills.

From there, we cross some private farmland before heading into the bush on an advanced tramping track and winding our way up the valley that the Piraunui stream flows down, until we get to the helicopter pad and carpark on State Highway 25A just before the Taparahi bridge.

Possibly there may be a very rough track that will allow us to progress even further and connect on to the Kaitarakihi summit track. Either way it will require a return journey back down to the Visitor Centre and bus. Bring your swimming kit as there may well be a chance to take a dip at the end of the tramp.

Good medium fitness will be required to complete this tramp in a timely manner, avoiding delay or inconvenience to the party!

This is a Medium Grade out-and-back tramp on an advanced track, through farmland and bush, starting with a river crossing – expect wet feet. It is about 12 kilometres and takes about 4 hours. The terrain is rolling to steep, with an elevation gain of 500 metresDoC track category is advanced tramping track.

Please check: Trip Gradings, read the Additional event information below, and do your own research if unsure about going.
