We have plenty of options for you on the upper slopes of the mountain, bring extra money if you would like to try the Sky Waka gondola! Below are several other options, we will mix and match as per the weather and interest.
Tongariro Crossing
For those who don’t mind crowds, good medium fitness will be required and of course suitable weather! Approx 6 – 8 hours.
Scoria flats – Mangatururturu hut: For those you haven’t quite completed this section of the Round the mountain, on our previous adventure we will pass Lake Surprise on the way and exit out at Ohakune Mountain Road. Approx 7 hours.
Stanton Memorial Loop: 1931 saw was one of the largest search and rescue missions in New Zealand history from the slopes off Mt Ruapehu for 14 university students. From Scoria Flats car park, this will involve off track tramping, and we will see if we can locate the Stanton memorial bronze plaque, we should get some great views. Approx 5-6 hours.
Tama Lakes: A good replacement for the TRC if the weather doesn’t play ball, but this time we can travel a little further up to the top of Tama hill, or those wanting an overnight adventure off track if we get enough takers, bring your tent for this one. Approx 6 hours.
