North Shore Tramping Club
This island was closed to the public for over a hundred years when it was an addiction-treatment centre. Interesting buildings still stand and there’s a fascinating small museum with island history.
Bring your camera for stunning views of the island sanctuary, home to some rare NZ native birds and reptiles. Including Weka that are running around everywhere! Bring swimwear, ample food and water, and a change of warm clothing in case it turns chilly at the end of the day waiting for the ferry. Please ensure that all of your gear is completely clean and devoid of seeds to protect our treasure islands biosecurity:https://www.rotoroa.org.nz/conservation/biosecurity
There’s usually some free parking on a Sunday in the streets in and around Viaduct Harbour Ave and Pakenham Street. Otherwise it’s downtown parking buildings. The Downtown carpark is right across the road from the wharf at $10 for all day. (Vehicle height clearance 1.9m). https://at.govt.nz/driving-parking/parking-in-auckland/downtown-car-park/
